About the Gamo language

Gamo, also known as Gemu, is a language of Ethiopia with over 1,000,000 users in the
Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples’ region: Gamo-Gofa zone.

Its dialect is Dache and has a substantial lexical similarity with Gofa, Dorze, Dawro, Wolaytta, Koorete and Male.

Gamo was re-introduced theough a Church-based literacy program started 2007. It is also taught as a major at the university level and Taught in primary schools in grades 1–4 as the medium of instruction, in grades 5–9 as a subject.
